The assignment activity allow teachers to collect work from students, review it, grade it, and provide feedback. Students can either upload files or type directly in the Moodle editor to submit a written assignment.

To add an assignment turn editing on and click the "+Add an activity or resource" link in any section of your course. You will see the following:

Select the 'Assignment' option.

You will then see the following page:

Enter an Assignment name and Description. If you need more space or want to style the text, click the Show editing tools button to display the Moodle editor. Now, scroll down and you will see several assignment settings:

By default Moodle sets a start date and a due date for the assignments. To disable this, uncheck each of the 'Enable' checkboxes.

Scroll down and you will see the Submission types settings:

Using the submission settings, you can configure the Assignment to accept either text entered in the Moodle Editor, or files uploaded by students.

  • If you want students to be able to type their assignment into a Moodle Editor box, check the box for 'Online text' and uncheck the 'File submissions' box.
  • If you prefer that students upload their files (for example, a Microsoft Word document), leave 'Online text' unchecked and ensure that 'File submissions' is checked.

You can use the 'Maximum number of uploaded files' option to increase the number of attempts each student can submit.

Scroll down and you will see the Feedback types section:

Feedback comments allow the teacher to leave comments about each student submission. 

Feedback files allow a teacher to upload a file in response to a student submission. For example, a teacher could provide a Word document that contains tracked changes on a student submission.

Scroll down to the Submission settings section:

Several settings are available here to consider.

Now, expand the Group Submission settings branch. If checked, students working in groups may submit an assignment.

Scroll down and you will see the Grade settings:

Here you can select the grade for the assignment. Instead of selecting a grade, you could also choose a scale such as Pass/Fail. If you are using a Rubric to grade the assignment, you can select Rubric in the Grading method selection box.

Scroll down and click 'Save and display'.

You will now see the assignment:

Once students have submitted assignments, you can click 'View/grade all submissions' to see and grade all of the submissions.

Student View

When a student visits your assignment activity, they will see a link to submit their file:

The student can click the 'Add submission' button to upload their assignment file.
