Linking to Files and Websites

Moodle provides two ways that you can add links to your course:

  • External Website Links (Google, NASA, etc.)
  • Internal file links - Links to files that you have uploaded to your course (images, documents, etc.)

External Website Links

To link to an external website, turn editing on and click the "+Add an activity or resource" link in any section of your course. You will see the following:

Add URL

Scroll down and select the 'URL' option. Now click the 'Add' button.

Give your link a Name and Description. Paste the web address of your external link in the External URL entry box.

Add URL

Scroll down until you see the Appearance section. Here, you can choose to either open your external link in the same window or open the link in a new window. If you choose to open your link in a new window, you can control various settings for the new browser window. You can leave it set to the default, Automatic, if you do not want to open the link in a new window.

Now, click 'Save and return to course.'

You will now see your external link listed in your course. Be sure to click your link to ensure that it works properly. If it does not work correctly, you can click the edit icon, Edit, and you will be able to fix the web address.

Internal File Links

To link to an internal file, turn editing on and click the "+Add an activity or resource" link in any section of your course. You will see the following:

Add File

Scroll down and select the 'File' option. Now click the 'Add' button.

Give your file a Name and a Description.

Add File

Now, scroll down and look for the content section:

Now, click the Add button. The following window will appear. Click the 'Upload a File' link on the left of the File Picker.

Note that you can also drag files from your computer and drop them into this window.

Add File

Now, you can click 'Browse' to locate your file on your computer and upload it to your course. Once you've selected a file, click the 'Upload this file' button. The File Picker will close and you will return to the previous window:

Add File

Scroll down until you see the Options section. Here, you can choose to either open your file in the same window, or force the web browser to download the file. Leaving this set to 'Automatic' should be fine for most files.

Now, scroll down and click 'Save and return to course."

Save and Return to Course

You will now see your internal file link listed in your course. Be sure to click your link to ensure that it works properly. If it does not work correctly, you can click the edit icon and you will be able to fix the file link.

The 'File' and 'URL' resources can be incredibly valuable tools for teachers when combined with resources found on PRISM. It's an easy way to directly link to some of our reviewed resources from within your course.
